I was runnin’ with the Devil, We were runnin’ from the laws

Runnin’ down a lonesome road, Rebels with a cause

The highway is for gamblers, But the game went run amok

I was runnin’ with the devil, We were runnin’ out a luck

I was runnin’ with the Devil, When he stole that V-8 Ford

He got the motor runnin’, I jumped on the runnin’ boards

A farm house door flew open, And I heard that shot gun blast

I was runnin’ with the Devil, Thought my time had surely past

I was runnin’ with the Devil, We hit up a one horse town

Got in a runnin’ battle, When the sherrif come around

Now, I never shot the sherrif, But the Devil shot his wife

I was runnin’ with the Devil, I was runnin’ for my life

I was runnin’ with the Devil, He said son we’re a headin’ south

I couldn’t get a word in, He kept runnin’ at the mouth

A cop come up behind us, I pulled over and let him pass

I was runnin’ with the Devil, We were runnin’ out a gas

I was runnin’ with the Devil, Burnin’ up my runnin’ shoes

He was runnin’ round in circles, I was runnin’ from the blues

He said let’s hop a freight train, on that old Rock Island Line

I was runnin’ with the Devil , We were runnin’ out a time

I was runnin’ with the Devil, We were rollin’ down the tracks

When you’re runnin’ with bad company, There ain’t no comin’ back

Some say the party’s over, but the road it never ends

When you’re runnin’ with the Devil, Son, You ain’t got no friends

I was runnin’ with the Devil, swore an oath to never part

But one day he turned his back on me, and I got a runnin’ start

I left him at the crossroads, with a guitar in his hands

I was runnin’ with the Devil, I was free from him at last

I was runnin’ with the Devil, And so the story ends

Last I heard, that Devil, he had run for President

You can fool some of the people, sometimes I heard it said

But if you’re runnin’ with the Devil, Then you’d better off be dead

If you’re runnin’ with the Devil, Son, You ain’t got no friends
